and the survey says...
...it worked (I'm sure you were concerned). Given the better part of a day to air dry, the sink-washed clothes exhibited all the hallmarks of clean laundry. For me, the reclamation of tautness is every bit as important as the cleaning/deodorizing-- a facet that I believe most people appreciate but rarely express.
I'm writing this at the end of a full day of wearing socks and underwear washed in the aforementioned load. Prior to giving the thumbs-up, I wanted to allow for enough time to pass should a rash manifest, or worse: a once-dormant flesh-eating bacteria transferred to my underwear's waistband from a rogue remnant of pancetta that had been skulking in one of those...microscopic nooks in the stainless steel(?). It's remarkably easy to psych yourself out such that every tiny little itch (that would normally go unnoticed) is amplified to a deafening degree. [How and why these bouts of hyperawareness--including but not limited to 'itches'-- come and go is fascinating!]
Anyway, no skin disorders to report, no resurrected odors, no article damage-- overall a pretty decent experience that will remain in my quiver (which is also, coincidentally, a blaze-orange Sainsbury's bag).
I'm not advocating that hand washing clothes in a sink will slake some deep-rooted primal desire for self-sufficiency, or whisk one back to the halcyon days of loincloths and glacial tributaries. But like candy corn and Styx-- in small doses, it's pretty good.
